
The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the ONE Campaign, and the Elliott family announce a call for entries for the Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling. The award honors up-and-coming journalists in Africa who strive to strengthen people's voices and illuminate transformational change on the continent.
Prizes
Cash Prize: $5,000
Certificate: Personalized award certificate
Internship: A two-week internship at The Economist in London, UK, from June 22, 2026, to July 3, 2026.
Eligibility Criteria
Who: English-speaking journalists working in Africa for print, broadcast, and online news media.
Experience: Applicants must have no more than 10 years of journalism experience.
Submission: One published piece that exemplifies Africa through thoughtful reporting and excellent storytelling. Impactful investigative or explanatory pieces are preferred.
Language: Submissions must be in English. Works in other languages must include English translations.
Media Format: Print, broadcast, digital, multimedia (web, audio, video, visual, or mixed media) are all welcome.
Publication Date: The story must have been published between December 1, 2024, and December 1, 2025.
Selection Process
Winners are selected by a distinguished international jury including media leaders from the US, UK, and Africa.
Selection is based on the quality of the piece and the impact the work has had in communities.
Applicants will be notified of their status by the spring of 2026.

Established in honor of Michael Elliott, former ICFJ director, editor at The Economist, Newsweek, and Time, and CEO of ONE. The award reflects his belief in great journalism and commitment to progress in Africa.
